Personal Statement
IFEOMA CELESTINA ORABUEZE is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacognosy, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lagos, Nigeria.
My specific areas of research interest are Ethnomedicine (formulation and the use of medicinal plants and natural products in the healthcare system) and Natural product Chemistry (new bioactive “lead” compound isolation and quality control analytical skills).
My research work in ethnomedicine focuses on the formulation, efficacy, and safety uses of medicinal plants in the treatment and management of malaria, multidrug-resistant infections, oxidative stress, neuropharmacological diseases, hypertension, reproductive health, and nutritional Pharmacognosy.
My research experience in natural product chemistry includes the use of modern technology in new drug discovery via bioactive guided isolation, purification and characterization of Pharmaceutical “lead” compounds from plants in response to sustainable global health.
In summary, my research fills the knowledge gap between the Biology and the Chemistry of the bioactive components of plants/natural products that elicit the healing activities.
My long-term dream/goal is to establish a natural product research laboratory that can be accessible to researchers within the University of Lagos and beyond. Thus, increasing natural product research volume in search of new and medically active compounds and also serving as a hands-on training center for capacity building and mentoring towards achieving the production of quality herbal products for sustainable health for all.
I am also a member of the African Centre of Excellence for Drug Research, Herbal Medicine Development and Regulatory Science (ACEDHARS), a World Bank Centre of Excellence
